Junk Yard Jog 5k - April 10, 2010

The Junk Yard Jog 5K is an annual event in support of Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful environmental education programs. Although it may seem unusual, the cross-country course at the Athens-Clarke County Landfill is extremely scenic as it winds through a forest, across a pasture, and along side of a stream. This location allows us the opportunity to educate folks about issues related to landfills and proper solid waste practices. This event also involves the Little Landfill 1 Mile Fun Run as an opportunity for children to become involved. BEE BEE Clean, the KACCB Mascot, has been known to run the entire mile with the children!

The JunkYard Jog logo/mascot is the faithful landfill buzzard! Local artist and ACC Landfill employee, Savic Enn, created the Buzzard logo in 1999. Each year the logo is attached to a different motto, such as “Run you old Buzzard” or the “The Buzzards are Swarming.” This diversity keeps are runners eager to participate in this fun event. Sightings of the Buzzards are common as participants run the unique course. Runners report several other wildlife sightings such as owls, hawks, and deer.

All proceeds from the event go to Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful to support environmental education and community beautification resources.

Awards are given to top three in standard five-year age groups.
